Azra Bihorac
Azra Bihorac, MD, MS, FCCM, FASN, is the University of Florida College of Medicine’s Senior Associate Dean of Research, the R. Glenn Davis Professor of Medicine, Surgery, and Anesthesiology, and the Co-Director of the Intelligent Critical Care Center (IC3). She has multidisciplinary training in internal medicine, nephrology, critical care medicine, informatics, and data science.
Dr. Bihorac leads a cross-disciplinary research partnership, Precision and Intelligent Systems in Medicine Research Partnership (PRISMAP), engaged in artificial intelligence and informatics research in medicine with continuous NIH funding since 2010 and 175 peer-reviewed publications with more than 10,000 citations.
Dr. Bihorac is a survivor of the Bosnian genocide as a religious minority, and her pathway from a refugee to American citizen ran in parallel to her professional career. Her personal experience of war, persecution, and displacement inevitably shaped her personal and professional interests, beliefs, and alliances. Dr. Bihorac is an outspoken activist for inclusiveness and equity in medicine, both as a holistic mentor and a catalyst for new ideas and connections.
Dr. Bihorac has mentored more than 80 undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral students and organized educational activities for professional development for women in medicine on a national level. Her clinical work, research, and teaching are aligned with her vision for intelligent human-centered health care, where innovation, technology, diversity, and inclusive excellence are aligned to deliver optimal quality and experience for every patient, caregiver, and provider.
Dr. Bihorac’s research focuses on a trustworthy, reproducible, sustainable, and ethical computing framework for developing and deploying state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and pervasive sensing techniques for medical applications. She is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine Data Science Task Force, developing a national roadmap for integrating AI in critical care.
